How often do you see
a menu stating “made with free-range beef” or “contains
vegetarian cheese”? Not very often, yet when buying the same
food in supermarkets, it is usually well labelled.
Restaurants, pubs, take-aways and other food outlets have fallen
far behind in terms of ethical food purchasing. Britain is a nation
of animal lovers, and awareness of the appalling conditions that
some animals are kept in is growing.
Already we have seen some supermarkets such as Waitrose and Marks
and Spencer switching completely away from using battery farmed
eggs, but this is just the tip of a much larger social movement.
Animal welfare is becoming a major factor in people’s food
purchasing habits. The growth in popularity of cooking programmes
on the television and cook books by famous chefs has led to an increase
in demands for ethically produced meat and other food products.
More and more people want free-range beef, pork, lamb and chicken,
rather than battery-farmed meat.
Yet when eating out, 95% of all the meat and other animal products
that we buy are completely anonymous. Label My Food is campaigning
to encourage restaurants, pubs and cafes to find out where their
produce really comes from and pass that information on to their
customers so that we have a real choice about the food we eat.
If you want to know whether what you are eating is ethically produced
or not, then join
