The environmental impact
of importing food to Britain is massive. Planes, ships and trucks
arrive constantly, often carrying food that could easily be grown
in Britain. The excuse that it is apparently cheaper to purchase
overseas doesn’t take into consideration the unnecessary environmental
damage of such decisions.
As well as promoting British food on environmental grounds, you
may also want to support local and British businesses for patriotic
reasons. British farming has been severely damaged by the European
Union’s Common Agricultural Policy, resulting in thousands
of small British farms disappearing.
Overall, British farming is also far more ethically minded than
many foreign farms, and buying British ensures at least a minimum
standard of animal welfare that can’t be guaranteed when food
is produced overseas.
Label My Food is encouraging restaurants, pubs and cafes to offer
locally grown and produced meals on their menus, and to provide
more information about where their food comes from. If you want
to promote local food, then why not join Label My Food today? You
