Default Tesco Ring Doughnut trap

I went round to someone's house today and was offered some doughnuts. I politely turned them down because they had jam in them, and as everyone knows it probably isn't vegetarian jam. However, I was then ambushed with the offer of some ring doughnuts instead and stuffed my face with two of them.

It was only when I got home that my other half pointed out that they are probably made using eggs, which mean battery farmed eggs.

Yet of course there wasn't an ingredients label on the pack because they were bought from the bakery... where apparently supermarkets think that ingredients aren't important.

I am a terrible vegetarian, which is why I desperately need improved labelling!

The only way you'd find out is to ask Tesco what kind of eggs they use in their bakeries.

If they weren't using battery eggs in their bakery products, then you can be sure thatTesco would go out of their way to make sure you knew all about it.

They will also no doubt have contained milk, which would have been produced by cows living in conditions comparable to those of battery hens.

I am not sure how prevalent battery milk farming is at the moment. We certainly always try to buy organic milk at home, but when eating out it is nigh on impossible to find any businesses using it.

This is certainly an aspect of menu improvement that we can look at as well - offering organic milk/dairy alternatives.

The vast majority of milk used by restaurants and manufacturers comes from factory-farmed animals.

If something just says 'milk' , then it's logical to assume that it comes from factory-farmed cows.

Plenty of organic milk produced in the UK comes from animals within organic dairies who have endured factory-farming conditions (whether lifelong, or towards the end of their lives) - so the issue of whether or not milk is organic, is a seperate one from the issue of how animals have been treated.

I agree, that it would be good if restaurants offered soya milk more often.... I hear that Starbucks offers soya milk, but don't know where else does.

Do you have a source for that please? I would be interested to know the percentages, especially in relation to British versus imported milk.
