A number of religious
groups have specific interests in the food that they eat, and poor
menu labelling can make it difficult for them to adhere to the restrictions
of their faith.
Hindus
Orthodox Hindus are vegetarian, and some will not want to eat onions,
mushrooms and garlic. Many non-orthodox Hindus believe in promoting
good animal welfare.
Muslims
Devout Muslims will not eat food that contains pork, blood or alcohol.
This has consequences in terms of pork gelatine and some food cooked
using an alcoholic sauce. Some Muslims will also insist on having
Halal meat.
Sikhs
Many devout Sikhs will refuse to eat any meals that contain halal
or kosher meat, or alcohol. Some Sikhs will not eat beef; others
will not eat pork and others will be vegetarians.
Jews
Certain foods, notably pork and shellfish, are forbidden to devout
Jews; meat and dairy are not combined, and meat must be ritually
slaughtered and salted to remove all traces of blood.
Buddhists
Many buddhists are vegetarian.
Christians
Some Christian groups are mostly vegetarian.
